Facial Paralysis

By

A baby can suffer from facial paralysis due to birth trauma. This could result when the infant's cranial facial nerve is injured during a difficult birth from either pressure on the baby's face or using forceps during delivery.

A good way to recognize facial paralysis is to watch a newborn when it's crying. The damage to the facial nerve will show on the baby's face because there won't be movement on injured side of the face, such as closing the eye or moving the mouth.

Typically, facial paralysis is curable. If the facial nerve was just bruised during labor, the baby's face won't move for several weeks, but the paralysis will eventually wear off. The infant will be able to control more of his or her facial muscles as the weeks progress.

However, if the nerve fiber is damaged or torn, the baby may suffer lifelong injuries from a traumatic birth. The infant may need surgery and therapy to correct facial paralysis.

Situations Causing Facial Paralysis

Several factors may contribute to the cause of facial paralysis during birth, including:

  • Epidural anesthesia
  • Forceps
  • Medication such as Oxytocin
  • Prolonged labor
  • Prolonged pregnancy
  • Traumatic birth delivery
